A question for everyone here: I have is a single family residence (NFPA 13D, 2010 Edition) in which the owner is voluntarily wanting to protect the exterior patio and lanai areas-all unheated areas. At the present, only Tyco makes a residential dry pendent sprinkler; however, the owner also wants all of the heads to be concealed and the only residential dry pendent is semi-recessed. As such, the owner may then dictate that he wants non-residential dry pendents that have a flat concealed plate.
However, the local AHJ will (most likely based upon my prior experience) require a proof calc of these areas in order to quantify the pipe sizing to feed the non-residential standard heads. At that point it becomes a problem. Per section 13D, 2010 Edition, 8.1.3.2 non-residential sprinklers are to be installed per NFPA 13, not 13D, which would lend credence to a .10 density/900 sq. ft. design area (after reduction), etc. and for a simple 13D simple coming off of a 1" meter it won't wont (I already tried the calcs, not even close). HOWEVER, the appendix (section A.8.6.4) states that a simple (2) head design area using residential -or- quick response sprinklers may be used in instances where the local AHJ requires the attic to be sprinkled. While this is just the garage it kinda is in the same ballpark, intent-wise. In addition, section 8.1.2 states that the design area is to consist of (2) sprinklers in the most demanding compartment although this appears to be intended to apply to residential heads only, and not non-residential sprinklers. I would love to use the Tyco, residential pendent but since Tyco is the only manufacturer that makes a residential dry head they are getting their money's worth and even if the owner is ok with semi-rec heads out in these areas he may not be ok with the potential cost. I hate to admit that a "little" house is kicking my backside but this is a bit of a grey area. What does everyone think ? I would like to say I can figure this out on my own but I need to humble myself a bit and reach out into the community since I have been eating too much humble pie lately, lol.
