Here is the verbiage from 2009 IBC (just because that is what I had in my notes)...
Section 410 - Stages and Platforms 410.7 Standpipes. Standpipe systems shall be provided in accordance with Section 905. 905.3.4 Stages. Stages greater than 1,000 square feet in area shall be equipped with a Class III wet standpipe system with 1 1/2-inch and 2 1/2-inch hose connections on each side of the stage. Exception: Where the building or area is equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system, a 1 1/2-inch hose connection shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 13 or in accordance with NFPA 14 for Class II or III standpipes. 905.3.4.1 Hose and cabinet. The 1 1/2-inch hose connections shall be equipped with sufficient lengths of 1 1/2-inch hose to provide fire protection for the stage area. Hose connections shall be equipped with an approved adjustable fog nozzle and be mounted in a cabinet or on a rack. If you choose to install a 1 1/2" hose connection in accordance with NFPA 13, go to 8.17.5 (2013 ed.). Reed A. In CA, we amend the IBC so I can't be sure of where you'll find it, but for us the script is in 905.3.4. It's the designer's option and there are scenarios for both. If the 2-1/2" what's the point of the reducer? It can be arranged either as a standpipe system or as hose valves supplied by the sprinkler system. I've done several schools and the AHJ has always allowed 1-1/2" valves since they would only be used in a "clean-up" type capacity. A/E now wants me to change them to 2-1/2" valves with a 1-1/2" threaded reducer. Make sense to anybody? Brian Harris, CET BVS Systems Inc.
