Actually 905.3.4 says you need "hose connections on each side of the stage" but
the exceptions says, "...a 1 ½" hose connection shall be installed...". The
IBC commentary clarifies, "The exception recognizes the benefit of the building
or area being sprinklered. If so, then only a single 1 ½" connection is
required...."
It was just not clear to me by some of the verbiage when using this exception
whether it was an additional 50 gpm added to the 250 gpm combined requirement
or if it was part of the 250 gpm as is typical.
Thanks.

Subject: RE: Stage Calc Hose Allowance
Reed:
Code sez you need hose connections on BOTH sides of the stage, so 50 + 50 = 100
GPM inside if using "small hose connections supplied by the sprinkler system".
If they are a "Class II standpipe hose connections" then you add 100 at the
more demanding of the two and that's all.
My opinion only,
Steve L.

Subject: Stage Calc Hose Allowance
When taking the IBC exception for the required Class III wet standpipe on a
stage of 1000+ sq ft and installing the 1 ½" hose connection in accordance with
NFPA 13, do you include an additional hose allowance on the sprinkler calc?
Stage is OH2 so I have a 250 gpm hose stream requirement currently added at the
connection to the underground city water main (effective point). To be
technically correct do I change that to 200 outside hose at the effective point
and 50 gpm inside hose at the connection of the 1 ½" hose to the sprinkler
system?
Below are some of what I think are relevant code and standard references...
IBC 2009
[F] 905.3.4 Stages. Stages greater than 1,000 square feet in area shall be
equipped with a Class III wet standpipe system with 1 1/2-inch and 2 1/2-inch
hose connections on each side of the stage.
Exception: Where the building or area is equipped throughout with an automatic
sprinkler system, a 1 1/2-inch hose connection shall be installed in accordance
with NFPA 13 or in accordance with NFPA 14 for Class II or III standpipes.
[F] 905.3.4.1 Hose and cabinet. The 1 1/2-inch hose connections shall be
equipped with sufficient lengths of 1 1/2-inch hose to provide fire protection
for the stage area. Hose connections shall be equipped with an approved
adjustable fog nozzle and be mounted in a cabinet or on a rack.
NFPA 13, 2010 edition
Chapter 11 Design Approaches
11.1 General. The requirements of Section 11.1 shall apply to all sprinkler
systems unless modified by a specific section of Chapter 11 or Chapter 12.
11.1.6 Hose Allowance.
11.1.6.4* Water allowance for outside hose shall be added to the sprinkler
requirement at the connection to the city main or a private fire hydrant,
whichever is closer to the system riser.
11.1.6.5 Where inside hose connections are planned or are required, the
following shall apply:
(1) A total water allowance of 50 gpm (189 L/min) for a single hose connection
installation shall be added to the sprinkler requirements.
(2) A total water allowance of 100 gpm (379 L/min) for a multiple hose
connection installation shall be added to the sprinkler requirements.
(3) The water allowance shall be added in 50 gpm (189 L/min) increments
beginning at the most remote hose connection, with each increment added at the
pressure required by the sprinkler system design at that point.
