We have a customer who is going to build a 75'x75' building to house one are more Fluidized bed cleaning system/s. They want to know what type of system would be required. The entire process take place inside a metal insulated enclosure, but the fluidized bed temperatures can reach 850°F. Process works by placing parts to be cleaned into a bed of fine quartz sand which is fluidized by injecting a combustible gas and compressed air mixture and then igniting it. This removes paint build up and combusts the resulting volatile gases, they then run the gases through an afterburner and cyclone to remove particulates, this is then exhausted it to atmosphere. My first thoughts were to tell the customer to hire a Fire Protection Engineer or get a ruling from their insurance carrier as to what they want. However we have done some powder coating booths and ovens in the past, and I don't see this as being any worse than those. My only real concern is what controls are in place to prevent and/or monitor the buildup of volatile gases and the possible explosion of same. I watched a video on their web site, it's like looking into a boiling lava pit inside the unit.
