Ladies/Gentlemen: I am not a committee Member. But my position as a Fire Protection Engineer would be NOT to replace "shell" sprinklers with QR UNTIL new tenants occupy space(s) and determine if they are LH or OH/XH...My co-workers (retired State Fire Marshals) concur. If I were the AHJ, I would rule 'leave them in place', as is, until occupied, then make determination. Best to All- Jerry [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) Jerry D. Watts, M.S.F.P.E. Question for all my NFPA 13 committee members (and anyone else who wants to chime in). We have (4) building that have had the offices and ceilings demolished leaving it a market ready warm shell. AHJ is now stating that all existing uprights need to be removed and replaced with QR sprinklers. A.8.3.3.1 states ”when renovations occur in an existing building and no changes are made in the existing sprinkler system, this section is not intended to require the replacement of existing standard response sprinklers with quick-response sprinklers” does the removal of the existing drops due to the removal of the ceiling constitute “changes made to the existing system” ?? My feeling is this wasn’t the intent of the committee (and I’m probably wrong) but I’d like to hear everyone’s comments/thoughts. Thank you!!
