We frequently thread up to 2" for ease of field modification.

We have also had quality challenges with 1 ¼" welding. Pipe that small can get
warped by the heat of welding.

Subject: RE: 1" grooved pipe and couplings and 2" and below grooved pipe

#1 - 1" grooved in the past has never made sense financially. Most fitters can
pull 1" in just as fast as they can put a coupling together. Plus,
modifications are easy to make to 1" threaded pipe. I am aware of the
manufacturer who is offering 1" grooved as a companion with their flex drops
and it is interesting but I'm not sure it is cost effective yet. I don't see a
reason to restrict its use but I'm not using it until it has been on the market
for a while longer.

#2 - I will groove 1 ¼" depending on the situation and groove 1 ½" regularly.
It think the spec comes from the same place that still calls for OS&Y valves,
alarm valves and water motor gongs. That's the way we've done it so that's the
way we'll do it. It made sense in the pipe schedule days to spec what the
contractor was doing anyway but doesn't any longer.

Good luck with your updates.

Subject: 1" grooved pipe and couplings and 2" and below grooved pipe

I'm wondering what the consensus is amongst the group here on a couple issues
as I look towards making some updates to our project specifications.

#1, the use of 1" grooved pipe and fittings versus threaded. This would be
using Sch. 40 pipe. I saw a presentation which if I were still a contractor
would definitely make me take a good hard look at utilizing this technology.
Do you use this or are contemplating using it?

#2, the use of grooved pipe and fitting on pipe below 2" in diameter. Seems
like the typical spec lists grooved for pipe above 2" but threaded below 2".
Why? Why not grooved pipe below 2"?

I would appreciate some thoughts and incite from those in the field.

Thanks,
