The fire official's comment is over-simplified because you can put in a private
underground fire main with one of three or four different licenses (FP,
plumbing, pipeline, general engineering) and you can submit as either a
design/build contractor under that number or under the seal and signature of a
PE in either mechanical or civil or FP disciplines.

That said, it has become a much more common practice 'round these parts that
the AHJ will not review the building fire sprinkler system plan(s) until the
underground fire service design is approved, so I'm down with that part of the
FM's rap.

Subject: Fire Service Submittal

I've received some comments on my plans regarding the underground fire service
I've shown for reference. The Fire Marshal is asking me to add note to my plans
that the fire service will need to be submitted and approved by a C-16
(California Fires Sprinkler Contractor Lic.) prior to the sprinkler approval.
While I understand the note, I question the specifics of the "C-16". Do civil
eng. have a sprinkler contractors lic. (at least in California)?

What are the requirements in California to submit and install Fire service?
