Mike,

There are different variables that could explain why you have had multiple
corrosion failures on one (1) system and not the other eight (8) in the
building:

  * Is there machinery or process equipment beneath the failing system?
Corrosion is accelerated by higher temperatures.
  * Has the failing system been renovated or modified more regularly than the
other systems? Corrosion is accelerated by more frequent system activity -
drain and re-fills.
  * Does the failing system have more elevation changes than the other
systems? More trapped air pockets in the system can lead to faster corrosion
failures.

As I mentioned, system activity can have a big impact on corrosion rates. The
simple act of taking a system out of service and replacing damaged pipe can add
enough fresh oxygen to cause your next leak. So the other eight systems could
have experienced some corrosion problems as well, but have not yet reached a
point of failure. Meanwhile the corrosion reaction in the failing system
continues to be fueled as you are forced to repair it.

Thanks,
Lucas Kirn, PE

Trying to explain to the owner why it's happened seven (7) times on the same
system

has been a problem.

Yes, And on the same first section of a 4" bulk main immediately following the
rise, and after that piece had been replaced. At no more the four feet away
from it's reflected twin riser coming off the same manifold. And then never
again anywhere. and it was a tree, not a grid.

I know you can't do dry gridded, but people do.

So assuming it is wet, yes.

Has anyone experienced a situation where one (1) of multiple gridded sprinkler

systems is the only one that is having corrosion issues?

There are nine (9) systems in this building.
