I'll second that. Expecting the responding fire fighters to close the automatic supply to the sprinkler system for the purpose of pumping into the FDC is not the intend of NFPA 13. If the valve failed to be closed (for any reason), the FDC is worthless.

The PIV won't prevent flow unless it's closed and let's hope it's not closed. To isolate the UG from the AG system. The question is the purpose of the check valve in the portion below the split at the manifold. Their FDC is piped in accordance with the detail. The designer says the check valve in the vertical is not needed because they are on a non-potable water supply and they have a PIV outside. Thoughts, opinions?
