In Sharon's case the max 'detector' spacing will be 15x15.
I pointed her to 72 because it shows how to calculate spacing under dome roofs.

Sorry but I see no sprinkler correlation whatsoever with regard to NFPA 72 heat detector spacing. Detectors have an entirely different set of spacing and placement rules apart from sprinklers. Heat detection devices mentioned within the NFPA 13/15 Standards are more often referring to dry or wet pilot sprinklers used to trigger other systems such as deluge or preaction systems. But while those are actual sprinklers, even those have different spacing and location rules than spray sprinklers. So, stay within the NFPA 13 spacing rules for spray sprinklers.

My first step would be getting input from a structural engineer as was stated previously. These types of structures may not necessarily have been designed to sustain the point load of a water filled sprinkler system and may require special hanging measures to distribute the loads across multiple wood members. I also hope you don't have to contend with seismic bracing but if you do, that also should be guided by a structural engineer so you know how and where to attach to the structure.

Then I'd look at Wood Joist construction and see how that fits with the actual construction of the assembly. Also take a look at other resources such as FM Global Data Sheets or XL GAPS protection data. Sometimes when dealing with wonky construction such as this, the insurers have more relevant data than NFPA.

So ... you're suggesting that sprinklers be ... spaced as detectors? What's the "deflector" distance of a heat detector and how would that translate to sprinklers on branch piping exactly? What the hell are you even talking about? I get that sense Brad that, at this point, you're just posting for the sake of seeing your words in print because that's the 2nd-most ridiculous thing (after the Ghost Ship comment) you've ever put up. Please, just stop.

Sharon - since it's framed of wood, I'd look at the criteria for depth and on-center the spacing of the members. It's likely to end up being (or closest) to Wood Joist Construction per A.3.7.1 (6) and that section even includes criteria on the span. The honeycomb elements will catch head just as solid wood or composite joist members will; the honeycomb pockets look (in photos, I had to Google "Lamella Roof") like the area and volume would be less than a TJI channel typically is, so heat and combustion byproduct will log down to the sprinklers pretty quickly. An unusual configuration by today's standards but I'm not sure it has to be that complicated for sprinkler locations.

All I've got Sharon is to look at NFPA 72 spacing and position rules for heat detectors for dome roofs, since the first responsibility of a sprinkler is to be a heat detector, and 13 does not adress dome roofs.

So, nothing extraordinary? I’m thinking wood joist criteria? I don’t
know yet how deep the wood is, but I’m thinking it is 12” deep.

I have been asked to provide a design for a gymnasium retrofit.
The gymnasium has a lamella roof system. I have never seen this
before.

I was wondering if anyone in the forum has had experience with a
lamella roof.
