If the state or jurisdiction has adopted NFPA #24, then section 6.6 covers
valves.

  * Sprinkler “riser” supply - See NFPA #24 Section 6.2.11 for valve
requirements for each of the fire sprinkler system supplies. The typical valve
is a PIV, but other arrangements are also permitted.

  * “Loop” section valves – See NFPA #24, Section 6.6.1 for valve
requirements within the “loop”. The typical valve will be a street valve, one
per six connections.

  * Hydrant valves – See NFPA #24, Section 7.1.1.1. A valve shall be
installed in the hydrant connection, within 20-feet of the hydrant.

If the jurisdiction has adopted valves into their own fire code, or for example
the purveyor of water likely has their own service standards to be met as a
condition of receiving water, then they should be able to copy/articulate those
to you.

Hope this helps.
