I’ve seen up to five control valves required on a line to a single sprinkler system. First the road valve where the tap has been made, then a vault with the two valves on the back flow device, then a yard PIV and finally a riser control valve. Considering that the single biggest source of system failure adding all these valves seems like a bad idea and demonstrates the importance of the main drain test. Now if we could only get ALL the ITM guys to regularly do it and to educate them ALL, not only as to why it's needed but also how to identify and read the meaning of the anomalies.
