I there is a standpipe system supplied from the water tank then you’d have the
opportunity to use hose streams so a hose demand should be added for the
sprinkler design. But as you point out, if there’s a standpipe supplied by the
water tank then you’d need to do separate calcs for both the standpipe and
sprinkler design-with-hose-allowance.

If there’s no standpipe and/or no hydrants supplied from the tank, then the
hose allowance would not be required.

If the inference is that the presence of a standpipe system would impose a hose
stream allowance on the sprinkler system demand, that isn't correct. However
you would have to design for the standpipe demand or the sprinkler demand which
ever is greater.

If you DON’T have hydrants downstream, do you have a standpipe with hose
connections and an automatic supply? I’m guessing not. If not then you don’t
need the hose allowance (since there’s no place for hoses to be used).

If you have hydrants downstream of the tank, do you need to account for site
fire flow requirements?

If so, you could be looking at 180k gallons and up.

Looking for preliminary sizing for a water storage tank. Worst case for this
particular building would be OH-2. (.2/1500 = 300gpm + 250 hose. 550gpm for a

to 40,000 gallons. Does that sound about right?
