I was going to ask about the location of the lights as well. I don’t think NFPA
has any allowances, but does anyone know if they’ve done testing specifically
with obstruction over the aisles only? Do obstructions still negatively impact
ESFR protection if the obstruction are not located over the commodity that is
burning?

More of a curiosity than a response to the original question.

Over the aisles? Depending on type of lights I’d have questions too about
locating ignition source. Locate one pallet load too high, and your on.

Anecdotal, but I would say the couple I can think of sprinklers stopped
quickly. E.G. A well known retail coffee company. Double load top tier with
non-coffee retail goods. Class IV-banded, wooden pallets. Only a couple
adjacent pallets burn. Less than common forklift at bottom of stack fire.

Not ESFR, normal control mode.

Best.

In my opinion you would have to comply with one of the following.

8.12.5.2* Isolated Obstructions Below Elevation of Sprinklers. Sprinklers shall
be arranged
with respect to obstructions in accordance with one of the following:
(1) Sprinklers shall be installed below isolated noncontinuous obstructions
that restrict only
one sprinkler and are located below the elevation of sprinklers such as light
fixtures and
unit heaters.
(2) Additional sprinklers shall not be required where the obstruction is 2 ft
(0.6 m) or less in
width and the sprinkler is located horizontally 1 ft (0.3 m) or greater from
the nearest edge
of the obstruction.
(3) Additional sprinklers shall not be required where sprinklers are positioned
with respect to
the bottom of obstructions in accordance with 8.12.5.1.
(4) Additional sprinklers shall not be required where the obstruction is 2 in.
(51 mm) or less
in width and is located a minimum of 2 ft (0.6 m) below the elevation of the
sprinkler
deflector or is positioned a minimum of 1 ft (0.3 m) horizontally from the
sprinkler.
(5) Sprinklers with a special obstruction allowance shall be installed
according to their
listing.

Subject: ESFR Heads and Obstructions

We are having a discussion in the office regarding lights and ESFR sprinkler
heads:

Is there a distance below the ESFR sprinkler heads where a 24”x 48” light
fixture is no longer an obstruction?

This was brought up because we just completed a multi-tenant building and one
of the tenants is installing racking and want the lights to be located just
above the racking which is 10’-0” below the sprinkler heads. Would these lights
still be considered an obstruction?

Thank you
