Sure, but that can be on the private side of any backflow.

More specifically, backflows are not fire protection devices, which is why they
are not prescribed by the sprinkler standard. The local health and water
departments are the enforcing agencies with regard to backflow prevention and
cross-connection control, and generally speaking a backflow appliance is only
required to be installed on a private connection to the public water system
that will supply a non-potable demand. So in 99+% of scenarios, the
installation of a strainer would be governed by the serving water agency since
it occurs on the public side (and often in the public right-of-way) of the
backflow appliance. Questions you have about such equipment should be
directed to the cross-connection control department of the water purveyor.

Backflows, technically, are really not part of 13.

They are included in-so-far as municipalities dictate them.

Therefore, the data sheet is the only real refuge for the info.

As per yours below, do not use a strainer on our systems.

Subject: Strainers On the Backflow

Guys,

I am looking and cant seem to find any info on strainers that are installed on
a fire protection line in front of the fire backflow. I found on the backflow
submittal where it states it, but is it in NFPA 13 and possibly UFC 03-600-01?
