Arguably in the right circumstances the tub or shower enclosure could be come a separate "compartment" I would think. We don't do a ton of this but a lot of higher end properties have a toilet cubicle that usually qualifies as a compartment and doesn't require a separate sprinkler in just it. Typically the rest of the bathroom is well over 55 sq ft in these types of residences though.

I believe past editions of NFPA 13R (pre-2007) included an explanation that the bathtub area need not be included in the square foot area of the bathroom. However, current editions (in this case the 2016 edition) do not include this language. My question is, does the tub area need to be included in the bathroom area?Thanks for your help.
