The primary drive is typically lead in isolation, if you aren't providing a PIV
or wall post I believe your next logical progression in the NFPA 24 "lead in"
valve list is valves in a fire rated room accessible from outside. But the AHJ
has latitude not to require that. Typically we just insist on PIVs on the
underground and no one has an issue and we install everything as you describe.

Subject: [Sprinklerforum] Riser Rooms

What code section(s) determines if/when sprinkler system control valves (system

And what about proximity to exterior access doors?

The standard for speculative warehouses in my neck of the woods (desert) is
generally to have risers in the pump room, or to have one or more banks of
risers positioned around the building, generally next to a man door. But, do
the risers have to be immediately adjacent to a door? Or within a certain
maximum distance? Are there instances where a dedicated room is required?

I realize many jurisdictions might have their own amendments and/or
interpretations, but I'm just wondering from a national code standpoint what
the driving factors are.

Thanks.
