I am designing an upfit that requires seismic. The concrete deck above is
at about 21'-0" while the new ceiling is at 8'-0". The ceiling is being
built with structural steel, but the ceiling panels are being installed
directly under the steel. The only way to install a branch line restraint
is to hang the line high enough to be able to achieve a >45° angle. This
may end up requiring a lateral brace assembly if the l/r is greater than
400. So I'm wondering if I can use a restraint from the structural steel
below the pipe, installed at 45° up from the ceiling. If it is within 6" of
the vertical hanger arranged for restraint against upward movement, and the
l/r does not exceed 400, then would that be acceptable per 9.3.6.1(5)
(2016) or 18.6.1(5) (2019)?
