I must calculate 7 heads on the top two levels (16.2.3.4) and they must discharge at not less than 15 psi (16.2.4.4). Does this mean that K-factor and density for the in-rack sprinklers do not matter as long as the discharge pressure does not fall below the require 15 psi? Or do the in-rack sprinklers have to maintain the same density and k-factor as the over head system covering the same area?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that all the required information is not located in chapter 16. The in-rack sprinklers do not match the ceiling sprinklers for any of the characteristics (k-factor, thermal response or discharge). Unfortunately you have to go to section 8.13.2 to find the rest of the criteria. As you already said, you have to have a pressure of 15 psi. As section 8.13.2 states, you can use a K-5.6 or a K-8.0. At 15 psi, these will discharge 21.7 gpm and 31.0 gpm respectively. Both are equally acceptable so why have the larger K-factor? Actually the 2010 edition added an even larger K-factor (the K-11.2). This is for the storage greater than 25 ft that requires a flow of 30 gpm instead of 15 psi. At this flow, the required pressure is 28.7 psi for the K-5.6 and 14.1 psi for the K-8 (and 7.2 psi for the K-11.2). Also note that even when the ceiling sprinklers are standard response, in-rack sprinklers can be (I'd say should be) quick-response.
