Sprinkler Protection for Interior Cloth Canopies
"We have some aesthetic canopies in a chain grocery store that are 3 ft wide and
4 ft in depth. The canopy surrounds a lowered ceiling area with sprinkler
protection
above at the roof deck level. The canopies protrude down from the lower ceiling
by 17 inches in one scenario and 7 inches in the other scenario. Are
sprinklers
required under the canopies?"

We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that sprinklers are not required under the canopies.

Section 8.15.7 addresses canopies but that is for "exterior" canopies on a
building.
The standard does not address interior canopies but the application is more
suited
for obstruction rules. Section 8.5.5.3.1 indicates that sprinklers shall be
installed
under fixed obstructions over 4 ft wide such as ducts, decks, open grate
flooring,
cutting tables, and overhead doors. Sprinklers are not required under the canopy
since it is less than 4 ft wide. The fabric that is provided in the awning may
melt or burn away when the fire plume occurs directly below it. The fabric will
then allow the fire plume to escape whereby damage to the structure may be
limited.
Since the heat plume is lost, it would seem to be difficult to activate
sprinklers
under the awning. As such, it seems reasonable to space the sprinklers to the
area
of the permanent ceiling and ignore the area under the canopy for combustible
fabrics.
The upper ceiling sprinklers will address the burning canopy. For fabrics that
do
not melt or burn away, the sprinklers can be spaced to the outer edge of the
canopy
observing the ceiling pocket rules and sprinkler obstruction rules such as the
"Beam
Rule" in Table 8.6.5.1.2 as an example. The application of sprinklers is
questionable
when fabric ceilings are involved and is beyond the scope of NFPA 13. Thus, the
issue should be brought to the attention of the engineer on record for the
project
for direction or discuss this with the AHJ.
