Wrap-around U-type Hook
"The requirements of 9.3.5.3 shall not apply where U-type hooks of the 
wrap-around
type or those U-type hooks arranged to keep the pipe tight to the underside of 
the
structural element shall be permitted to be used to satisfy the requirements for
 lateral sway bracing... The question is if the piping is supported on top of 
the
bottom leg of truss (instead of hung from the bottom of the truss) - essentially
 creating an inverted U-type hook installation with the "U" portion pointing 
upwards
vertically. Would this arrangement be acceptable to satisfy the requirements for
 lateral sway bracing?"

We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2010 edition as the applicable standard.

Our informal interpretation is that the U-hook can be used in an inverted 
orientation
if the pipe is tight to the structure.

Wrap-around type or U-type hooks were designed to support piping to be suspended
 below structural members.  The U-type hook hangers were not intended in an 
inverted
orientation to suspend pipe above a structural member, leaving a space between 
the
pipe and structural member.  The wrap-around type and U-type hooks can be used 
in
accordance with Section 9.3.5.3.10 as an exception for lateral sway bracing.  
This
section requires the U-type hook to be arranged to keep the pipe tight to the 
underside
of the structural element.  The wrap-around U-type hook will allow space between
 the pipe and the structural member.  Your application is opposite where the 
pipe
is on top of the structural elements with the wrap-around U-type hook inverted 
and
attached to the structural member to support the piping.  The concern is 
installing
the U-type hook in an inverted orientation.  This hanger would have to support 
the
weight of the water-filled pipe above the structural member.  The eyelet of the 
U-type hook may slip out from the fastener.  As such, this would not be 
considered
acceptable.  If the pipe rests on top of the structural member, the eyelet 
slipping
out from the fastener is not likely to occur.  Given this orientation, the loads
 imposed on the U-type hook may actually be less than the arrangement indicated 
in Section 9.3.5.3.10.  The structural member supports the weight of the 
water-filled
pipe and not the U-type hook.  An alternative would be to provide blocking that 
is attached and secured between the structural member and the pipe.  As such, 
the
inverted U-type hook orientation would meet the intent of NFPA 13 if the pipe 
rests
on top of the structural member and it's installed according to the remaining 
requirements
of Section 9.3.5.3.10.  The forces placed on the U-type hook in this orientation
 would be no different, if not less than that described in Section 9.3.5.3.10.
