The handbook notes, "In larger pipes (2 in. or greater), the paddle has less effect on the friction loss and can be ignored." The manufacturer's data calls out a 1 psi loss for waterflow switches 5 in. - 10 in. and a 3 psi loss for waterflow switches 1 in. - 4 in. Is friction loss required to be included for waterflow switches in pipes greater than 2 in.?" In response to your question we have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that friction loss is only included for flow switches in pipes 2 in. or less in size. This was added in NFPA 13 starting in the 2002 edition in Section 22.4.4.7(1). This only indicates to address flow switches in pipes that are 2 in. or less in size and is not necessary to include the friction loss for larger pipes. The handbook commentary says that the friction loss for paddle-type flow switches in small pipe was added to the list since most designers were forgetting about this source of friction loss and not accounting for it. The paddle has less of an effect on the friction loss and can be ignored in larger pipes greater than 2 in. The manufacturer does indicate friction loss values for pipes greater than 2 in. but the NFPA 13 standard is not requiring it to be addressed. The Hazen-Williams formula used for hydraulic calculations provides approximate results and using this for fire protection gives results close enough for practical applications.
