AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues May 3, 2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sprinkler Placement in Attic at Roof Hip "Under a combustible roof with a 4 in 12 pitch with combustible members less than 3 ft on center, Table 8.6.2.2.1(a) requires a maximum spacing of 15 ft parallel to the slope (up the slope) and 10 ft perpendicular to the slope (along the peak). A hip roof always requires a 10 ft by 12 ft spacing with a 20-psi minimum. Is there any way to space sprinklers for a hip roof to avoid the 20 psi minimum pressure?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that a minimum 20-psi pressure is required for hip roofs when using standard spray sprinklers. The requirements of Section 8.6.4.1.4 and Table 8.6.2.2.1(a) work for gable types of roofs for sprinklers under roof or ceilings in combustible concealed spaces of wood joist or wood truss construction with members less than 3 ft on center and slope having pitch of 4 in 12 or greater (attics). There is some confusion on how to apply the sprinkler spacing in the attic near the eaves at the corners for hip or Hipped roofs having pitch of 4 in 12 or greater. Section 8.6.4.1.4.3 requires standard spray sprinklers to be installed so that the sprinklers installed along the eave are located not less than 5 ft from the intersection of the truss chords, or the wood rafters and ceiling joists. Literally applying that requirement, the sprinkler has to be located exactly 5 ft from the intersection of the wood rafters and joists. Then Table 8.6.2.2.1(a) requires a minimum pressure of 20 psi from the sprinkler since the spacing is 10 ft perpendicular to the slope. An alternative to this approach is to use specially listed attic heads. The issue of sprinkler spacing for hip roofs was brought to the attention of the committee for the 2013 edition of NFPA 13. Proposal 13-195 recommended increased spacing at the corner of the eave for hip roofs. The committee rejected the proposal and provided a statement that this was a complex issue that needs time and attention to review and discuss. No technical supporting data was provided to increase the spacing and recommended that this to be submitted to NFPA's Research Foundation for funding of full-scale fire tests. The Report on Comments provided about the same result. Thus one is left with complying with the current requirements of NFPA 13 or applying specially listed attic heads. Another option is to get an exemption from the AHJ to allow for increased spacing at the corner of the eave for the hip roof or locate the sprinkler 4 ft from the intersection wood rafters and joists.
