AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues April 25, 2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NFPA 13R Ceiling Pockets "I have a ceiling pocket within a 12 ft by 16 ft room protected by sprinklers located in the 12 in. bulkhead surrounding the pocket. There is a beam down the middle that is 18 in. deep creating two separate pockets with two sprinklers each. Since the beam is 18 in. deep can I treat the beam as a wall and space to it and not have to protect the pocket separately?" We have reviewed NFPA 13R, 2010 edition that you indicated as the applicable standard as well as the 2013 edition. Our informal interpretation is that the beam provides a separation between the pockets where sprinklers are not required within the ceiling pockets if the AHJ accepts the new information from the 2013 edition. The 2010 edition requires sprinklers within the pockets per Section 6.2.4(4) since the unprotected pockets are within 10 ft. The 10 ft separation requirement was removed in the 2013 edition. The justification for removing this requirement is that when the ceiling pocket rules were brought into NFPA 13R from NFPA 13, the 10 ft separation came with it. The 10 ft dimension is excessive for the reduced pocket size. Thus per the 2013 edition, the 18-inch beam separates the ceiling pockets and meets the intent of that standard since each pocket is less than 100 cu. ft. The 2010 edition would require sprinklers in the adjacent pockets. It does not make sense to provide additional sprinklers within each pocket since sprinklers are already located at the bulkhead level. The room is relatively small where the heat plume will be captured where the sprinklers are expected to quickly activate.
