We have reviewed NFPA 13D, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that there is no limitation on dead ends for this type of piping arrangement. Since you are using CPVC piping on this application, there is no limitation on dead end runs that supply fire sprinklers only. This is illustrated by Figures A.3.3.11.3(a) A.3.3.11.3(b), A.6.3(a), and A.6.3(b). As explicitly shown in Figure A.3.3.11.3(a) there may long dead end branch lines that can also supply multiple sprinklers. The standard does say for listed special fittings, 1/2 in. non-metallic pipe and 1/2 in. copper pipe in Section 10.4.2.2 for network systems, number 3 says a water distribution pipe that supplies a sprinkler shall not terminate in a dead end. This does not apply for your situation since this is not a network system. A network system is defined in 3.3.11.4 as a type of multipurpose system utilizing a common piping system supplying domestic fixtures and fire sprinklers where each sprinkler is supplied by a minimum of three separate paths. Thus a single pipe for network systems cannot supply a sprinkler. A multipurpose piping system is defined in 3.3.11.3 as a piping system intended to serve both domestic and fire protection needs.
