We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that return bends are not required when using ESFR sprinklers. A clarification was added to the 2013 edition as Section 8.15.19.5. This says that return bends shall not be required for wet pipe systems where sprinklers with a nominal K-factor of K-11.2 or larger are used. The Sprinkler Systems Handbook commentary says that the purpose of return bends is to prevent collection of sediment in drop nipples. Return bends should not be taken directly off the bottom of branch lines in wet pipe sprinkler systems, particularly where the systems are supplied from water sources that could contain excessive sediment. Return bends are not necessary on wet pipe systems that use a potable water supply. In this regard, water supplied from a swimming pool is not considered a raw source requiring return bends. The substantiation used for this new section in the 2013 edition said that the requirements for return bends predates the development and use of larger orifice sprinklers including ESFR and CMSA sprinklers that have large enough orifices where sediment should not be problematic. FM Data Sheet 2-0 dated April 2011 has a slightly different approach to NFPA 13 regarding return bends. Section 2.1.3.1.4 is for non-storage sprinklers and Section 2.2.3.1.4 is for storage sprinklers. Both say to provide individual return bends for all K11.2 or smaller pendent sprinklers that are supplied from a raw water source, mill pond, or from open-top reservoirs. The size of the return bend can be either the same size of the branch line that feeds the return bend or one pipe diameter size smaller, but not less than 1 in.
