AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues August 21, 2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ESFR and In-rack Demand "Considering Table 17.3.3.1 and Section 17.3.3.4, when in-rack sprinklers are required beneath an ESFR ceiling solution, is the in-rack demand required to be balanced with the overhead ESFR demand?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that the in-rack demand is balanced with the ESFR demand. This is addressed in hydraulic calculations in Section 23.8 for in-rack sprinklers. The water demand of sprinklers installed in racks shall be added to ceiling sprinkler water demand over the same protected area at the point of connection in Section 23.8.2 and the demand shall be balanced to the higher pressure according to Section 23.8.3. There are no statements in Section 17.3.3 to over-ride the requirements of Section 23.8. An exception to this is Section 17.3.3.1.1 where solid shelf racks are protected with in-rack sprinklers in accordance with 17.1.5. The in-rack demand does not have to be balanced where you meet the requirements of Section 17.1.5.7.
