Noncombustible Canopies with Wood Ceilings

"The facility is an event hall with non-combustible construction internal and
outer
face construction flat roof pedestrian entrance canopies. The first canopy is
roughly
202 sq. ft. and the second is roughly 315 sq. ft. The canopy structure is
wrapped
in 5/8 in. gypsum board. However a decorative cedar Tongue and Groove finish is
attached to the 5/8 in. gypsum board wrapped steel stud canopies. Is sprinkler
protection required underneath these pedestrian canopies given that the surface
of the canopy is combustible and not structural?"

We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that sprinkler protection beneath the canopy should not be
required.

How to address a noncombustible projection with combustible exterior finish is
not
directly addressed. The text of 8.15.7.3 implies sprinklers are required
beneath
it but that is a more conservative requirement due to the canopy being of
combustible
construction. The issue at hand is the risk presented by a construction
feature.
As discussed in 8.15.1.2.18, we are allowed completely combustible exterior
assemblies
without sprinkler protection when it is limited to 4 ft wide and divided into
multiple
160 cu. ft. spaces (which can have up to 480 sq. ft. of combustible surface per
space). The main feature though is while having separated but unlimited amounts
of combustible (which can burn vigorously due to the enclosed vertical
combustible
components interfacing with horizontal ones); it is separated from the interior
of the building. As such it does not pose a significant threat and the
cost/benefit
does not merit providing protection within or below the assembly. The
noncombustible
exterior canopy in question has no more than 315 sq. ft. of combustible surface
material that is only horizontal (will not burn as vigorously as the soffits and
decorative elements assembly) and it's separated from the building interior
with
noncombustible construction. Thus, it presents if anything less risk and merits
the same basis for not providing sprinklers beneath it. NFPA 13 is constantly
expanding the areas where sprinklers can be omitted but it is not possible for
it
to explicitly identify all locations that merit it. As such, it is reasonable
to
apply the underlying basis for identified allowances to other construction
arrangements.
Since it is not explicitly stated, though, concurrence by the AHJ is necessary.

US Experience with Sprinklers
Report: NFPA's "U.S. Experience with Sprinklers"

Author: John R. Hall, Jr.

Issued: June 2013

Includes statistics on how often sprinklers are reported in fires, by property
use,
and their estimated impact in reducing the average loss of life and property per
fire. Includes statistics on performance, usage and reliability of sprinklers,
as well as leading reasons when system fail to operate or operate but are
ineffective.
Also includes special study statistics on non-fire sprinkler activations.
