In-rack Sprinkler Maximum Spacing
"In Figure 17.2.1.2.1(d), the upper right figure, this figure notes an 8 ft
maximum
spacing in the multiple row racks transverse flue space. Section 17.2.1.5.3
notes
that in-rack sprinklers shall be located at the intersection of the transverse
and
longitudinal flues. Is there an 8 ft maximum spacing in the single- and
double-row
racks transverse space?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that 8 ft maximum spacing does not apply for single- and
double-row
racks.
As you noted in your question above, Section 17.2.1.5.3 says that in-rack
sprinklers
shall be located at an intersection of transverse and longitudinal flues while
not
exceeding the maximum spacing rules. Section 17.2.1.5.2 indicates that the
spacing
of in-rack sprinklers shall be in accordance with Figures 17.2.1.2.1(a) through
17.2.1.2.1(f). These figures show plan and elevation views for single-, double-,
and multiple-row racks. The 8 ft maximum distance between sprinklers is only
indicated
for multiple-row racks and applies to the spacing in the transverse flue. It
does
not apply to the spacing in the longitudinal flue for the single- and double-row
racks. The "maximum spacing rules" referenced in are not explicitly provided
for
Chapter 17. The spacing is indicated by Figures 17.2.1.2.1(a) through
17.2.1.2.1(f)
but they do not specify a maximum spacing for single- and double-row rack. The
2013
edition of the Sprinkler Systems Handbook provided new commentary to help
clarify
the spacing of in-rack sprinklers. The commentary indicates that Figures
17.2.1.2.1(a)
through Figure 17.2.1.2.1(f) show in-rack sprinklers in the transverse flues.
Where
longitudinal flues exist, the in-rack sprinklers need to be placed at the
intersections
to make sure they are in the path of the fire's growth. As identified in the
footnote
to these Figures, the boxes in the figures represent storage loads that are 4 ft
to 5 ft wide. In the cases where the in-rack sprinklers are shown between every
other box, the intent is to have the in-rack sprinklers no more than 11 ft
apart
[5 ft for the boxes and 6 in. for the two transverse flues]. Where rack uprights
are more than 11 ft apart, in-rack sprinklers should be installed at the
intersection
of the flue spaces at the rack uprights and at the intersections in between flue
spaces. If there are no flues between the rack uprights, then additional
in-rack
sprinklers shall be installed between the transverse flues to meet the maximum
distance
rules (see section 17.2.1.5.4.) In the cases where the figures show in-rack
sprinklers
at every intersection of transverse and longitudinal flues, the sprinklers
should
be a maximum of 5.5 ft apart. If flue spaces are more than 5.5 ft apart,
sprinklers
should be installed at every intersection of flue spaces and in between flue
spaces
so that they are no more than 5.5 ft apart. We recognize that the criterion in
this
section is poorly presented and submitted a public input to correct it thus no
additional
guidance will be available until after the comment stage.
