Listed Antifreeze - Not Yet
The 2013 editions of NFPA 13, 13R, 13D and the 2014 edition of NFPA 25 standards
require the use of listed antifreeze solutions. Listed antifreeze is not
available
yet.
One of the listing agencies, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) recently
released
a bulletin to manufacturers announcing the availability of the Outline of
Investigation
for Antifreeze Solutions for Use in Fire Sprinkler Systems, UL 2901. The outline
covers new requirements for antifreeze solutions intended to be used for fire
sprinkler
systems. Do not expect to immediately see listed solutions. The manufacturers
have
to prepare their solutions to pass the testing criteria. The solution is then
submitted
to the testing agency where the product is placed in queue until the agency has
time to test the product. With that said, the earliest a listed antifreeze
solution
that could be available is no less than 5 months. It is estimated that a listed
antifreeze solution will take longer than the 5-month time frame.
Here are the references in the standards for listed antifreeze solutions.
NFPA 13 - 7.6.2.1* Except as permitted in 7.6.2.2, antifreeze solutions shall be
listed for use in sprinkler systems.
NFPA 13R - 5.4.2* Piping in areas that cannot be maintained reliably above 40°F
(4°C) shall be protected by use of one of the following methods:
(1)*Antifreeze system using a listed antifreeze solution in accordance with NFPA
13
NFPA 13D - 9.2.2.1 Except as permitted in 9.2.2.3, antifreeze solutions shall be
listed for use in new sprinkler systems.
NFPA 25 - 5.3.4.2 Except as permitted by 5.3.4.2.1 and 5.3.4.2.2, all antifreeze
systems shall utilize listed antifreeze solutions.
In summary, NFPA 13 and NFPA 13R require that new systems use listed antifreeze
solutions. Until one is available, use an alternative type of system (dry pipe,
preaction, listed dry sprinklers). NFPA 13D and NFPA 25 start with a base
requirement
for listed antifreeze solutions with exceptions for the use of pre-mixed
antifreeze
solutions. These are located in Section 9.2 of NFPA 13D and Section 5.3.5 of
NFPA
25.
