Shadowing in the Corridor - NFPA 13R
"I have a project were the entranceways into apartments off the corridors have
an
alcove of 1 ft 6 in. deep and 4 ft 8 in. wide. I am protecting the corridors
with
residential sprinklers. Is it imperative to protect each alcove individually as
well as the corridor or is the over spray of the corridor sprinkler enough
coverage?
In NFPA 13R, Section 6.7.7.1.5.5 says that small architectural features are
permitted
to be unprotected if the criteria is met. Annex A.6.7.7.1.5.6 gives the
explanation
on why these are permitted. However, section 6.7 only is dealing with within
dwelling
units. Could the same be used for corridors protected with residential
sprinklers?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13R, 2007 edition that you indicated as the applicable
standard
as well as the 2013 edition of NFPA 13R. Our informal interpretation is that
shadow
areas are permitted in the corridors.
The standard does not specifically restrict shadowing in the corridor. The issue
of shadowing for residential sprinklers was specifically addressed in the 2013
edition. Section 6.4.6.3.3.1 indicates that shadow areas shall be permitted in
the
protection area of a sprinkler as long as the cumulative dry areas do not exceed
15 sq. ft. per sprinkler. This is not restricted to the dwelling unit. In
addition,
Section 6.4.6.3.3.2 indicates that shadow areas in corridors up to 2 ft in depth
and up to 9 ft in length behind sidewall sprinklers shall be permitted as shown
in Figure 6.4.6.3.3.2. This figure shows a corridor with alcoves as shadow
areas
that are 2 ft maximum deep and 9 ft maximum wide. Thus your application meets
the
intent of the standard without additional sprinklers in the entranceways
