AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues April 18, 2014 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Plastic Drain Pipe "Is it true that peripheral components such as alarm and dry valve trim parts, main drain/auxiliary drain/inspectors test valves, pipe, and fittings are not considered part of a sprinkler system and do not have to be listed for such use? Can plastic pipe components be used when running a drain through to the exterior to avoid leaving rust stains on the wall?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that the standards do not specify the type of pipe for drains and individual components of trim piping are not required to be individually listed. Section 6.1.1.5 of NFPA 13 indicates that components that do not affect system performance such as drain piping, drain valves, and signs shall not be required to be listed. Note the specific reference to drain piping. It would seem that you could run the drain line in CPVC or PVC without deviating from NFPA requirements. The 2013 edition of NFPA 20 supports this in Section 4.13.4 says that drainpipe and its fittings that discharge to atmosphere shall be permitted to be constructed of metallic or polymeric materials. As such, when CPVC and PVC pipe are used as drains, the plastic susceptible to sunlight where it degrades and may become brittle. Thus in making a determination one must take into consideration where the pipe will be used such as when it discharges directly to the outside. The CPVC manufacturer's installation instructions indicate that the pipe can be protected with latex paint. Regarding peripheral components, the 2013 edition added new information as Section 6.1.1.2.1 that says valve components (including valve trim, internal parts, gaskets, and the like) shall not be required to be individually listed. Thus there is no individual listing for individual components. Some manufacturers indicate in data sheets that valves are listed only when used with the valve manufacturers trim sets. This leads one to obtain the replacement parts from the manufacturer to maintain the listing. The handbook commentary from the 2013 edition under Section 6.1.1.2.1 indicates that valve parts, such as resilient valve seats that require servicing or replacement, are typically not listed. Parts of a listed valve should be replaced with parts specified in the valve installation manual.
