AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues April 2, 2014 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Protection of CPVC Pipe from Punctures "We installed 1-in. CPVC pipe in a wall from a lower floor to a sidewall sprinkler. We have installed nail plates on the wood studs where the pipe passes through. The wall is constructed with 3 5/8-in. studs where the outside edge of the pipe is close to the edge of the 3/8 in. or large gypsum wallboard. The AHJ is citing Section 6.7.2.5 for the protection of risers subject to mechanical damage to protect pipe in between the studs. Does NFPA, IBC or IFC require any other protection for the CPVC pipe?" We have reviewed NFPA 13R, 2013 edition as the applicable standard as well as the 2012 editions of the IFC, IBC, IRC, IPC, and the CPVC manufacturers installation instructions. Our informal interpretation is that there are no listings, standard or code requirements to protect pipe in between the studs from a puncture hazard. Nonmetallic pipe in walls do run the risk of being punctured by nails, screws, and other similar objects. There is no code requirement with the exception of pipes passing through studs to protect the pipe. Section 6.7.2.5 states, "Sprinkler risers subject to mechanical damage shall be protected by steel posts, concrete barriers, or other approved means." This section does not apply to every pipe in the vertical position that is located within a gypsum or plywood wall. This section is to provide physical protection to the sprinkler riser since damage could impair the piping and components that provides water to the system. The wording does not apply to all vertical sprinkler pipes supplying a sprinkler in between two studs. The manufacturer instructions, IBC, IFC and the NFPA standards are silent on the protection of piping within walls faced or protected by gypsum or plywood. The only reference that could be found is when plumbing pipe passing through studs within a wall in the 2012 edition of the International plumbing Code in Section 305.6 (305.8 in 2009 and 2006). This indicates that in concealed locations where piping, other than cast-iron or galvanized steel, is installed through holes or notches in studs, joists, rafters, or similar members less than 1 1/2 in. from the nearest edge of the member, the pipe shall be protected by steel shield plates. Such shield plates shall have a thickness of not less than 0.0575 in. (No. 16 gage). Such plates shall cover the area of the pipe where the member is notched or bored, and shall extend a minimum of 2 in. above sole plates and below top plates. The 2012 edition of the International Residential Code has the same wording in Section 2603.2.1 in 2012 edition. Several manufacturers of CPVC piping have references to protecting the pipe when penetrating metal studs so the studs don't scar or puncture thermoplastic pipe by using rubber or plastic grommets such as those commonly used in the plumbing industry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ firesprinkler.org [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0018OVWtDJqffjXZwpyLOM4xl_qZuivteQmB3sDZ6jJJYF7tCfbeSrNIEAXsHWUAH5eOrYSSiq7mrodlzgeWHgpp7bw1PLcKCTeJDo87pFQWA8=] Hosted by the American Fire Sprinkler Association ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Technical Update is prepared by the Technical Services Dept. of the AFSA: Vice President of Engineering and Technical Services Roland Huggins, a PE registered in fire protection engineering; Phill Brown, a NICET IV certified automatic sprinkler technician and NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) and Tom Wellen, a PE registered in fire protection engineering.
