Drain Riser Size for NFPA 13R
"We have a four story apartment building that is supplied by a combination
standpipe
system. The combination standpipe supplies a 2 in. floor control assembly
(control
valve, check valve, flow switch, 1 in. test-n-drain and gauge kit). The 1 in.
floor
system drain is connected to a common 1 1/4 in. drain riser. The field
inspector
is mandating that the drain riser to be 2 in. He states that the standpipe is
larger
than 4 in. so that the drain riser must be 2 in. Is it permissible to install
the
drains as indicated with 1 in. floor system drain tied into a 1 1/4 in. drain
riser?"
We have reviewed the 2013 editions of NFPA 13 and NFPA 14 as the applicable
standards.
Our informal interpretation is that the drain riser size you specified is
allowed
by the NFPA 13R standard.
This is explicitly addressed in the NFPA 13R standard in Section 6.9. Each
sprinkler
system shall have a drain on the system side of the control valve according to
Section
6.9.1. Section says that the drain pipe shall be at least 1 in. nominal
diameter
and shall be arranged so that it can drain all portions of the system. The
drain
riser provided exceeds the minimum size by indicated by the standard. The drain
riser provided is for the NPFA 13R floor control assemblies and not the
standpipe
system. NFPA 14 has it's own drain sizes specified in Section 7.11. NFPA 14
requirements
stop at the control valve for the floor control assembly. A drain riser for the
standpipe systems is required only where the standpipe is equipped with
pressure-regulating
devices to facilitate tests of each device. That is not the case for this
application
thus this does not apply. Main drains for standpipes are addressed in Section
7.11.2.1
where it indicates that a main drain shall be provided on the standpipe system
side
of the system control valve in accordance with Figure 7.11.2.1 and that the main
drain connection shall be sized in accordance with Table 7.11.2.3. These
drains
can be combined or be separate from the NFPA 13R drain riser.
