Additives and Coatings - NFPA 13
A new Section 7.11 was added for additives and coatings in the 2013 edition of
NFPA
13. This section indicates the chemicals used for this purpose have to be
listed.
Now that listing is a requirement, the listing agencies are at work developing a
standard for products to submitted for testing. The new wording says:
7.11 Additives and Coatings.
7.11.1 Additives to the water supply intended for control of microbiological or
other corrosion shall be listed for use within fire sprinkler systems.
7.11.2 Internal pipe coatings, excluding galvanizing, intended for control of
microbiological
or other corrosion shall be listed for use within fire sprinkler systems.
The Automatic Sprinkler Systems Handbook for this section says chemicals that
are
introduced into sprinkler system piping to prevent corrosion could have a
detrimental
effect on the piping material or joining methods, and therefore, these chemicals
must be listed for use within these systems.
Since this new requirement became effective, the standards for listing are under
development with the listing agencies. As such, there are no "listed" additives
and coatings available at this time. Although there are additive and coating
products
available, they are not currently listed. Listings may not be available for some
period of time since the testing standards have to be developed and then the
products
can be submitted for testing. The standards development process by the listing
agencies
is also slowed down due to the verification of compatibility of the additives
and
coatings with the use of non-metallic piping systems.
Since additives and coating products are currently available, they still can be
used per Section 1.5 Equivalency for those portions of the country using the
2013
edition. Technical documentation shall be submitted to the AHJ to demonstrate
equivalency
per Section 1.5.1.
