Dry Pipe System Water Delivery
"Do dry pipe systems require the use of a calculation program to determine the
time
required for water delivery?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that the use of the calculation program to determine initial
water
discharge from all dry pipe systems is not required.
The use of this calculation program is an option, but is not required for all
dry
pipe systems. Starting off with Section 7.2.3.1, it says, "The system capacity
(volume) controlled by a dry pipe valve shall be determined by 7.2.3.2, 7.2.3.3,
7.2.3.4, 7.2.3.5, or 7.2.3.7." Thus, the standard is providing five (5)
different
approaches to verify initial water discharge. Since the "or" statement is used,
only one approach has to be met. If the statement included an "and" statement,
then all would apply. The five (5) different options for determining initial
water
discharge are outlined below:
1) 7.2.3.2 Initial water is discharged from the test connection within 60
seconds.
2) 7.2.3.3 No time requirement for initial water delivery from the test
connection
for system sizes not more than 500 gallons without a quick opening device.
3) 7.2.3.4 No time requirement for initial water delivery from the test
connection
for system sizes not more than 750 gallons with a quick-opening device.
4) 7.2.3.5 Size of the system is based on the calculation method and program
for
water delivery at the maximum times listed in Table 7.2.3.6.1 for the hazard
shown.
5) 7.2.3.7 System size is determined from initial water discharge from the
system
test connection or manifold outlets (1-4 outlets) is not more than the maximum
time
of water delivery specified in Table 7.2.3.6.1. The use of the calculation
program
is not required for this option.
Dry pipe systems protecting dwelling unit portions of any occupancy are required
to have water initially discharged from the system test connection in not more
than 15 seconds. The options outlined in 7.2.3.2, 7.2.3.3, or 7.2.3.4 are not
permitted
for systems protecting dwelling unit portions of an occupancy.

paper submissions and November 14, 2014 for online submissions.
