Concealed Combustible Spaces
"Limited-Combustible (Material) is referenced in Section 3.3.16 and also
Concealed
Spaces in Section 8.15.1.2.1. Will it be allowed to frame these components out
of "noncombustible" fire retardant-treated framing and sheathing, eliminating
access
to these interstitial areas, and installing the gypsum on non-treated wood
framing
down to the concrete?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is sprinkler protection within the concealed space is not
required.
The omission of sprinklers is allowed by Section 8.15.1.2.11 when all the
exposed
combustible construction (framing and sheathing) consists of wood that is
pressure
treated at the factory with a fire retardant. The annex for this section says
that
the allowance to omit sprinklers for fire retardant-treated wood requires a
pressure-treated
application. It does not apply to coated applications. The Automatic Sprinkler
Systems Handbook commentary indicates that although fire-retardant coatings are
not included in 8.15.1.2.11, nothing in the standard precludes the
consideration
of the use of fire-retardant coatings under the equivalency provisions in
Section
1.5. Note that fire retardant-treated wood construction is not noncombustible
or
limited-combustible. Noncombustible material must be incapable of burning and
fire
retardant-treated wood does not qualify. Limited-combustible material must have
a potential heat value of no more than 3,500 Btu/lb. Wood, even when fire
retardant-treated,
has a heat value around 9,000 Btu/lb.
