Antifreeze Systems
The 2013 editions of NFPA 13, 13R, 13D and the 2014 edition of NFPA 25 standards
require the use of listed antifreeze solutions. Listed antifreeze is not
available
yet. Questions continue on when one will be available. When a listed
antifreeze
solution becomes available, the announcement will likely be trumpeted from the
rooftops.
Local jurisdictions are taking notice regarding antifreeze systems. Although
the
information below applies to Michigan, it could be an expanding issue. Check
with
your local jurisdictions for similar restrictions. It might be worth confirming
what facilities they have authority over and if others states apply to the same
type facilities.
Here is a notice from Michigan:
This notice is to inform you that a new procedure has been put in place at the
Bureau
of Fire Services (BFS). Please read the attached document.
Starting on December 1, 2014, the BFS will not permit new installations of
antifreeze
sprinkler systems in their regulated facilities. NFPA has been involved with
concerns
over antifreeze systems for several years now and the latest findings show that
even with lower concentrations there are fire safety issues. The BFS is
following
NFPA's lead and have put a ban on new installations of antifreeze sprinkler
systems
until a listed antifreeze solution can be found. This ban is for BFS regulated
facilities, which include hospitals, nursing homes, adult, foster care, home for
the aged, schools, colleges, universities and penal facilities.
The BFS has only received a few new installations of antifreeze systems this
past
year and believes that many sprinkler companies are also being proactive and are
finding other sprinkler solutions.
