Fire Department Connection Inlets

"There is some confusion between NFPA 13 and NFPA 14 regarding the number of
inlets
for fire department connections (FDC). What is the proper number of inlets
required
on the FDC for a standpipe system that has a fire pump with a 750 gpm demand?"

We have reviewed the 2013 editions of NFPA 13 and NFPA 14 as the applicable
standards.
Our informal interpretation is that three inlets will be required with a
750-gpm
demand and four inlets with a 1,000-gpm demand.

The requirements of the NFPA 14 in Section 7.7.1 indicates that Class I and
Class
III standpipe systems shall be designed so that the system demand can be
supplied
by each fire department connection, which is provided in accordance with Section
7.12. Section 7.7.2 indicates that where an automatic or semiautomatic water
supply
is required for a Class I, II, or III standpipe system by Section 5.4, the
standpipe
system shall be designed so that the system demand can be independently supplied
by the attached water supply and each fire department connection provided on
the
system. This tells us that even with an automatic water supply, the demand also
has to be supplied through the fire department connection. The number of hose
inlets is determined by Section 7.12.3 that indicates fire department connection
sizes shall be based on the standpipe system demand and shall include one 2-1/2
in. inlet per every 250 gpm. Thus, if the standpipe system has a demand of 750
gpm, there will need to be three 2-1/2 in. inlet connections. If the standpipe
has a 1,000-gpm demand, four 2-1/2 in. inlet connections are required. A
single
inlet such as a Storz connection is also permitted as the fire department
connection
by Section 7.12.3.1 where it allows an approved large diameter hose connection
of
a size to accommodate the require flow. NFPA 13 addresses the number of inlets
differently on FDCs to supplement the water supply rather than accommodate the
demand
flow in Section 6.8.1. This section indicates that the fire department
connection(s)
shall consist of two 2-1/2 in. connections using NH internal threaded swivel
fitting(s)
with "2.5-7.5 NH standard thread," as specified in NFPA 1963, Standard for Fire
Hose Connections. The annex clarifies in A.6.8.1 that the purpose of the fire
department
connection is to supplement the water supply but not necessarily provide the
entire
sprinkler system demand. Section 6.8 also permits threadless couplings and a
single
inlet connection for risers 3 in. and smaller. Fire department connections are
not intended to deliver a specific volume of water. As such, NFPA 14 requires
the
system demand to be supplied through the FDC whereas NFPA 13 does not. This
difference
affects the number of required inlets.
