Chapter 13 and Applying the Modifiers of Chapter 11
"We have an unheated metal building with a 4 in 12 roof slope. The storage is
Class
III palletized or solid pile at 11 ft-10 in. in height. We are starting with
Section
14.2.3.1 that directs us to Table 13.2.1. The density is 0.20 over the most
remote
1500 sq. ft. showing the design curve for OH2. A 30 percent increase for the
dry
system equates to 1950 sq. ft. remote area. Do we have to apply another 30
percent
increase per Section 11.2.3.2.4 for the roof slope? Would 12.1.2 also apply for
this application?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that the horizontal roof restrictions do not apply and an
additional
30 percent increase for the roof slope would be required.
The beginning of Chapter 11 begins with the requirements of Section 11.1, which
applies to all sprinklers systems unless modified by a specific section of
Chapter
11 or Chapter 12. Chapter 12 is a general chapter for storage that begins by
indicating
that the requirements of Section 12.1 are applicable to all storage arrangements
and commodities other than miscellaneous storage (Chapter 13) and as modified
by
specific sections in Chapter 14 through Chapter 20. Then Section 12.1.2 says
that
the sprinkler system criteria specified in Chapter 12 and Chapters 14 through 20
are intended to apply to buildings with ceiling slopes not exceeding 2 in 12.
The design area modifiers in Chapter 11 are not applicable to storage
occupancies.
This is why Section 11.2.3.2.4 ends with "sloped ceilings in non-storage
applications".
Chapter 12 has its own section (12.5.1) addressing design modifiers and the
only
design modifier is for dry pipe and preaction systems. In order to use NFPA 13
design criteria for storage occupancies, the ceilings in these areas must not
exceed
a slope of 2 in 12. This leads to installing a new drop ceiling. If the
storage
is 12 ft or less for Class I through Class IV commodities, Section 14.2.3
reverts
back the Chapter 13. Chapter 13 refers to Chapter 11 in Section 13.2.2 and does
not require a horizontal ceiling. The 30 percent increase for the roof slope
exceeding
2 in 12 is Section 11.2.3.2.4. This was explicitly clarified starting in the
2010
edition of NFPA 13 (Section 13.2.2) were it tells us the modifiers of Chapter 11
apply for the storage of Class I through IV commodities with a storage height
less
than 12 ft for Sections 14.2.3.1 and 16.2.1.2.1. This also includes Group A
plastics
up to 5 ft storage height in Sections 15.2.1 and 17.2.1.1.
