Offset in a Supported Armover
"I have a two foot armover to an elbow. Off the elbow I have a one-foot armover
with a drop to a head. The hanger is on the one-foot armover to the head and
the
inspector wants a hanger on the two foot arm over also. Is this correct?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that an additional hanger is not required.
This is addressed as new text in the standard as Section 9.2.3.2.5. This
indicates
a single section of pipe shall not require a hanger when the cumulative distance
between hangers on the branch line does not exceed the spacing required by
Table
9.2.2.1(a). The annex provides additional clarification that when a branch line
contains offsets, sections of pipe are considered adequately supported by the
hangers
on the adjacent pipe sections when the overall distance between hangers does not
exceed the requirements in Table 9.2.2.1(a). The cumulative distance includes
changes in horizontal direction. Multiple consecutive sections of pipe should
be
permitted to omit hangers. Although this is an armover, the same concept
applies
as that for a branch line. Similar wording is provided for mains in Section
9.2.4.7
along with annex material. These short lengths of pipe or offsets joined
together
do not require a hanger on each section of pipe, provided the spacing does not
exceed
the distances in Table 9.2.2.1(a). As such, each hanger will not have to support
much more than the weight of a continuous section of pipe.
