Area of Coverage in Electrical Rooms
A maintenance office has electrical panels that take up half of the room and
there
are two sprinkler heads on other half of room but not on the half that has the
panels.
Is this room missing coverage or is it done correctly because of the electrical
panels?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard and NFPA 70,
2011
edition as the applicable code. Our informal interpretation is that the proper
spacing of sprinklers is required.
The requirement is that if the piping is located above the dedicated space
greater
than 6 ft above the equipment, provisions must be made to protect the equipment
from condensation, leaks, or breaks. Article 110.26(E)(1)(a) defines the
dedicated
electrical space as being the space equal to the width and depth of the
equipment
and extending from the floor to a height of 6 ft above the equipment or to the
structural
ceiling whichever is lower. It further stipulates that no piping, ducts, leak
protection
apparatus, or other equipment foreign to the electrical installation can be
located
in this zone. For instance, electrical conduit serving another piece of
electrical
equipment in the room is not permitted to pass through the dedicated space of
the
electrical equipment in question. Then (b) says the area above the dedicated
space
required by 110.26(E)(1)(a) shall be permitted to contain foreign systems,
provided
protection is installed to avoid damage to the electrical equipment from
condensation,
leaks, or breaks in such foreign systems. Thus sprinkler piping, while not
permitted
in the dedicated space, are permitted above it as long as protection is
installed
to avoid damage to the electrical equipment from condensation, leaks, or breaks.
Subsection (c) clarifies that sprinkler protection is allowed to be provided
for
the dedicated space, but the piping must comply with this section, which is
essentially
(a) and (b). At first glance this appears to say that sprinkler system piping
is
permitted to run through the dedicated electrical space above the equipment.
However,
closer examination of the wording reveals otherwise. It says that "protection"
is permitted for the dedicated space, not "piping". So, the sprinkler and
piping
may be located such that the sprinkler will provide protection (spray water
into)
for the dedicated electrical space, but neither the piping nor the sprinkler may
be located in the dedicated space. They must either be located laterally out
to
the side or above the dedicated space. Again, if the piping is located above
the
dedicated space, provisions must be made to protect the equipment from
condensation,
leaks, or breaks. If there is room for sprinkler placement per NFPA 70,
sprinklers
should be located per Section 8.6.2.2 for maximum protection area of coverage
and
Section 8.6.3 for sprinkler spacing.
