Dry Pipe Remote Area Minimum Size
"I have a overhang at a dealership that I need to hydraulically calculate a dry
system. The remote area has two rows of sprinklers fed by a single row of
sprinklers.
Can the room design method be used for this application (like a corridor)?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that the room design method cannot be used for the canopy.
Section 11.2.3.3.3 says that in order to utilize the room design method, all
rooms
shall be enclosed with walls having a fire-resistance rating equal to the water
supply duration indicated in Table 11.2.3.1.2. This application is outside and
not enclosed by rated walls so it is not applicable. A single line of
sprinklers
feeds two branch lines containing four sprinklers each. The remote area
includes
these eight sprinklers along with sprinklers on the single line. It is not
feasible
to calculate a 1,000 sq. ft. of single line of sprinklers to attain the minimum
remote area of 1,950 sq. ft. A single line is a special design area and
shouldn't
be mixed together with a density/area approach. The sprinklers on the single
line
have already been addressed by another remote area. Thus, calculate the eight
sprinklers
in remote area and apply Sections 23.4.4.1.1.4 and 23.4.4.1.1.5. Section
23.4.4.1.1.4
indicates that where the available floor area for a specific area/density design
criteria, including any extension of the area as required by 11.1.2 and Section
12.3, is less than the required minimum design area, the design area shall be
permitted
to only include those sprinklers within the available design area. Thus, you
calculate
the eight sprinklers that you have available. Next is Section 23.4.4.1.1.5 that
indicates where the total design discharge from these operating sprinklers is
less
than the minimum required discharge determined by multiplying the required
design
density times the required minimum design area, an additional flow shall be
added
at the point of connection of the branch line to the cross main furthest from
the
source to increase the overall demand, not including hose stream allowance, to
the
minimum required discharge as determined above. Annex material in
A.23.4.4.1.1.4
provides an outline for the five-step procedure for the calculations. This was
an attempt to provide an overage of water delivery or adequate water supply to
account
for an extension of fire from the smaller design area into an adjacent area.
