I just found out that mdf and ldf ARE defragged even with SQL server
running, you can see that with the defrag tool.

OT_ is the gain that much with defragging of mdf and ldf files, to warrant
shutting down the site for X hours to defrag them?

Danna,
The easiest way is to create stop.cmd and start.cmd batch files
and use the NET STOP / NET START commands to stop or start the services.
Then you can schedule the batch files or include them as commands in the
defrag job.

Thanks,
Eric

Is there a way to automate sql services to stop and restart periodically?
I
would like to schedule monthly defrags at night and need to shut down sql
services in order to defrag mdf and ldf files?
