I hope you are missing something...but I don't think you are. So far my experience is that the export in Management Studio is not quite fully baked...and the whole Mananement Studio package is slow...and I'm missing enterprise manager already. You may want to try out red-gates sql-compare and sql-datacompare tools(http://www.red-gate.com/). They are very useful for this kind of operation...especially if you are later making schema changes locally that you want to push to production databases.
