I am in a hosted environment. I have 42 more sites to move in, and 35 more
databases. It's proving to be a laborious process.

With SQL2000, I could use Enterprise Manager to create a DTS package and
save the package. That meant uploading a database was just a click, then
when I got a cup of coffee the job was done. With this new version
because it doesn't have DTS, I am taking two hours to upload a database,
because there is no equivalent of DTS, no matter what the docs say. (They
allege the new SSIS is better and enhanced, but I've yet to see how that can
be).

To upload a database now requires the following:

Run SQL Scripts to drop all tables if they exist and create new ones, along
with the indexes, foreign keys etc. Upload the data by SQL Inserts (in
theory you can run them all in one go but I have found that is too risky -
one error and you have to start again from the beginning because finding
exactly where it broke isn't easy - the error message doesn't tell you which
record failed.)

Apparently, there is a way to program the SSIS so it will cycle through all
the tables uploading one then the next, but since it doesn't have a "replace
data" option you cant use it like DTS. And finding out about this aspect
has proved elusive so far - all the docs are peppered with links to
somewhere else and in order to follow the procedure you have to wade through
a maze of links to get there. Typical Microsoft documentation - impossible
to use.

The alternative is to take a backup, email it to the support guy and wait
till he restores it to the server for me. Might be in an hour. Might not.

I guess I'll figure out a way to do this simply sooner or later - I'll have
to or give up hosting small sites. I cant spend 2 hours every time I have
to upload a database - it's a routine job that happens all the time.

Subject: Re: SQL2005 how to upload databases?

Well, I wouldn't write off the tool completely...it is a 1.0 version,
and I can see potential in it. But I have found it to be painfully
slow at times vs enterprise manager...and after 5 or so years with
virtually the same interface in enterprise manager, it is hard to
change.
