Make sure you are running SP2 on both the server and on your
workstation. SP2 makes the management studio experience faster. Is the
slowness problem just with SSMS? Is all your traffic going through
either a software or hardware firewall? If you have a software
firewall, try disabling it temporarily. Any sort of security or A/V
software running on the production server, or some intermediate box
between you and production?
