I don't have the answer. My impulse is that this is a bad idea all around, although I can't quite put my finger on why; it's just a gut feel.
You should have the same version on the "Processing Machine" that you have on the server, although this may technical work with any version that supports MS SQL replication / DTS / [I think 2005 has a newly named version of DTS?] features. Do all versions support these features? I have no idea.
