Thanks for all the great responses. Disabling threads in SQLite (and removing the pthreads lib from the application build) seemed to fix things. We're still testing but we went from crashing constantly to not being able to make it fail. Clearly something's amiss with threads on this platform. We may or may not get to the bottom of that but at the moment things are looking up.
