Not true.

The event model works just fine for GUI programming.
The bulk of my consulting practice (for the past 13
years) has been writing high-performance GUIs running
in front of numerically intensive scientific and
engineering applications.  Most of these run on 
windows - at least over the past 5 years.  None
of them have ever used more than a single thread.
